Experimental Aircraft Association - Chapter 818 - Burlington, WA
Dec 2010 - UPDATE
My second BD-5 used a Yamaha Nytro snowmobile engine. It is a 3 cylinder, water
cooled, fuel injected 4 stroke engine rated 130 hp at 10000 rpm. It has a 2 to 1
cog belt reduction to the final drive and I was able spin the engine at 8000 rpm
/ prop speed of 4000 rpm which gave a max speed of 215 mph. I used an aluminum
racing radiator which solved the cooling problems. Clean stall speed is 80mph.
Flaps and gear down lower the stall a bit, but the BD-5 must be flown onto the
runway at about 90 mph to get a smooth landing. I received a huge amount of
help from wife, Kathy, and members and friends of Chapter 818 in the building
and modifying of this plane. My thanks to all of them.
In October, I had a failure of the sprage clutch, part of the drive system, on
takeoff at Skagit Airport. I crash landed and essentially destroyed the BD-5 and
crushed a lower back vertebra. I have had surgery to fuse my vertebra and will
recover with a stiff back. I have resigned from the ranks of builders and flyers
of BD-5s.
